Artie Y. Ray, 88, son of Thomas and Carrie Smith Ray, was born Sept. 15, 1915, in Wayne County. He died April 23, 2004, at Licking Park Manor. He served in World War II. Mr. Ray lived at Tyrone several years, where he was a mechanic and worked at the Cabool shoe factory until his retirement. He loved visiting with family and friends and was always willing to help in anyway he could. He enjoyed hunting until his eyesight failed and enjoyed fishing as long as his health permitted. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Alvie, Arthur and Jesse; and two sisters, Margaret and Elsie Means. Surviving are his wife, Violet, of Raymondville; children, Gene DeWitt of Raymondville, Shirley DeWitt of Licking, Louise Baker of Black Canyon City, Ariz., Dorothy DeWitt of Houston and Carol DeWitt of Raymondville; one sister, Mary Ellen Schmid of Van Buren; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services were April 28 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wesley Wallace officiating. Burial was in the Tyrone Cemetery. “
