John G. Knauff, 53, the youngest of five children of George Davis and Helen Marie Stannard Knauff, was born March 9, 1951, at Oakland, Calif. He died May 5, 2004, at the Veterans Hospital in Topeka, Kan., of Emphysema. The family lived in the Bay area until the parents were divorced about five years later. His mother married Laurel H. Collins and the family moved to a farm at Upton, where John lived until he enlisted in the Army at the age 17. He was stationed in Germany for about a year and then served in Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic. He was placed on permanent war related disability upon his return from Vietnam. Over the years he worked construction and various odd jobs at sporadic intervals and lived in various assisted living arrangements much of the time around the state. He had been a permanent resident of building #6 at the Veterans Hospital in Topeka for several years. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, George D. Knauff, Jr.; and all three parents. Surviving are his older sister, Donna Kay Brown of Washington, Mo.; and two older brothers, Michael R. Knauff of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Gregory H. Knauff of Washington, Mo. Memorial Masses were May 19 at All Faiths Chapel at the Veterans Administration Hospital, in Topeka, Kan. Graveside service with military honors and burial are 1 o’clock May 20 in the Linden Cemetery at Linden under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel in Topeka, Kan. “
