Mabel Marie Howell, 89, daughter of Everet Varnell and Grace Stottlemyre Varnell, was born Nov. 16, 1914, at Manford, Okla. She died May 27, 2004, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. She married Raymond Baney Nov. 24, 1929. He preceded her in death. She was known for her great cooking and hand-crafted quilts. She worked at Cabool Shoe factory for many years and spent her retirement as a farm wife, caring for her animals and piecing quilts. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Virgil Varnell; three infant brothers and an infant sister. Surviving are her husband, Jim Howell of Summersville; six children, Dorothy Gray of Mountain Grove, Lee Baney of Omaha, Neb., Jewel Smith of Cabool, Wanda Kinch of Rock Springs, Wyo., Sue Fiegenschue of Summersville and Richard Baney of Hallsville; two sisters, Mildred Butts of Cabool and Mae Owens of Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Carl Varnell of Enid, Okla., and Gene Varnell of Woodward, Okla.; four stepchildren, Raymond, Allan and Roger McDonald and Ruby German; 24 grandchldren, 45 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and two couples she loved like her own, Tom and Jayne Wisch and Karl and Clara Lee. Services were May 29 at the Elliott-Gentry Funeral Home Chapel in Cabool with Greg Blankenship officiating. Burial was in the Providence Cemetery. “
