Robert Lee “”Bob”” Bates, 97, son of James J. and Mary F. Bates, was born Jan. 19, 1907, near Hazelton. He died Dec. 25, 2004, at Licking Park Manor.He married Josephine Sudheimer. They had two daughters. His wife died in 1963.He married Mabel Mittelbuscher in 1966.Mr. Bates worked for Swift Meat Packing house, retiring after 35 years.The Bates moved from East St. Louis back to Licking, where he enjoyed gardening, fishing, trapping, traveling and story telling.In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Bill, Clabe, Jim, Glen, Raymond, Elizabeth, Ellen, Elba, Beulah and Eunice.Surviving are his wife of Licking; daughters, Shirley Rensch of Licking and Norma Quint of Phoenix, Ariz.; stepdaughter, Marlyn Atkinson of Belleville, Ill.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Services were Dec. 31 at the Fox Funeral Home Chapel in Licking with the Rev. Gary Carter officiating. Burial was in Ozark Memorial Gardens at Rolla. “
