Martha Elmerine “”Jackie”” Gann Wilkerson, 91, daughter of Elic and Leda Baldwin Gann, was born Oct. 3, 1913, in South Dakota. She died Jan. 2, 2005, at Houston House.She spent most of her childhood and teen years on the family farm near Conway in Dallas County. At age 16, she moved to Springfield and worked for the Herschel Bennett family, helping care for their youngest son, H.E. Bennett. She traveled with the family since Mr. Bennett was a professional baseball player.She married Verl Richard Wilkerson Sept. 20, 1938. They moved to Alaska about the time World War II began. They homesteaded in Wasilla, Alaska, while working most of the time in Anchorage. Many times Mrs. Wilkerson would ride her bicycle 12 miles to work. Their first home was a hut with a dirt floor, but they built a log home on their homestead.They moved back to Dunn in 1970. She worked in retail until her retirement, when they moved to Houston.She was a charter member of Souls Harbor Family Worship. She never went to a church dinner without a car trunk full of home-cooked food. The Wilkersons were known for their secret recipe barbecue sauce.She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years; her parents; six brothers, Dalton, Virgil, Ralph, Cecil, Wintfred and Earnest Gann; and one sister, Margarine Burgard.Surviving are one brother, James Melvin Gann of Medford, Ore.; a stepdaughter in Oklahoma; and four step-grandchildren.Services are 11 o’clock today (Thursday) at Souls Harbor Family Worship with the Rev. Cordie Wimberley and the Rev. Bythel Friend officiating. Burial will be at 3 o’clock at Gann Cemetery near Conway under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool. “
