John Paul Hancock, 91, son of John and Cora Pharris Hancock, was born Nov. 28, 1913, at Crocker. He died Feb. 23, 2005, at Houston House.Mr. Hancock’s family moved to the Roubidoux area when he was a child.He married Jessie Doris Holmes Jan. 9, 1934. They had five children and were married 60 years before her death Dec. 13, 1994.Mr. Hancock operated the Flat Rock store and post office from 1942 to 1959. He enjoyed serving the public, visiting with customers, swapping stories and sharing hunting experiences.One of his greatest pleasures was quail hunting. He would train the dogs and loved working them while hunting. He was also an avid gardener, giving away surplus to friends.In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, six brothers; a stepson, Donald Hancock; one grandson and one great-grandson.Surviving are his four sons, Jerry of Bucyrus, Ervin of Peck, Kan., Ralph of Oregon City, Ore., and Kenneth of Dacono, Colo.; one daughter, Margaret Kiser of Plato; 17 grandchildren and 26-great-grandchildren.Services were Feb. 28 at the Union Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Postlewait officiating. Burial was in the Liberty Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home of Houston.Memorials may be made to Gideons International. “
