Woodrow “”Woody”” Augustus Cross, 73, son of Theodore Augustus and Zella Mae Ballard Cross, was born Nov. 27, 1931, at Bucyrus. He died Feb. 24, 2005, at the Missouri Veterans Home at Mexico, Mo.He graduated from Houston High School in 1949 and attended Southwest Baptist University at Bolivar, Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield and Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg.He was a veteran of the Korean War, enlisting in the U.S. Army in December 1953. He was honorably discharged in December 1955. He was a military policeman with the 3rd Quartermaster Co. at Fort Benning, Ga. He attended Provost Marshall General School at Camp Gordon, Ga., and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.Mr. Cross began his 33-year career state employment with the Texas County Welfare office in 1958. He was transferred to Greene County in 1961. From 1963 to 1968, he was a probation and parole officer in Kansas City District 4. In 1968, he moved to Warrensburg as probation and parole district supervisor. In 1972, he moved to Holts Summit to began working as a parole analyst with the Board of Probation and Parole. He retired in 1991.He married Joann Meredith Nov. 19, 1972, in Lee’s Summit.Mr. Cross was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church in New Bloomfield. He was a deacon at Glenstone Baptist Church in Springfield and was named deacon emeritus at Union Hill Baptist Church at Holts Summit. He held membership in the American Association of Paroling Authorities, Missouri Association of Social Welfare, Missouri Corrections Association and the Clay County Missouri Peace Officers Association.He was preceded in death by two half sisters and four half brothers.Surviving are three daughters, Deborah Flores of Holts Summit and Denise Cross and Diana Crutchfield of Jefferson City; two stepchildren, Debra Murphy Farris of Holts Summit and Ron E. Murphy of Lake Mykee; one sister, Dolores Dake of Springfield; three grandsons, four step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.Services were Feb. 26 at the Hopewell Baptist Church in New Bloomfield with the Rev. Rick Hopkins officiating. Burial with full military honors was in the Summit Memorial Park at Holts Summit.Memorials may be made to the Hopewell Baptist Church. “
