Josephine Madoline Miller Helton, 95, daughter of Daniel S. and Lettie B. Miller, was born Oct. 6, 1909. She died May 14, 2005.Mrs. Helton was a graduate of Dixon High School, Southwest Missouri State University and Drury College with degrees in education and a specialist degree in elementary and secondary education. She taught several rural schools in the Evening Shade and Plato area, where she lived most of her adult life. She taught and was principal at the Fort Leonard Wood/Waynesville School District, retiring in 1974 with 36 years working with children.She was a worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star and president of the American Legion Auxiliary at Plato; president of the Business and Professional Women and member of Alpha Dean Kappa, Beta Sigma Phi and Classroom Teachers Association of Waynesville. She had served as local and state president of Kappa Kappa Iota, a national teachers’ sorority.She became a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church at Big Pine in 1923. She attended Palace Union Church near her farm home.She was preceded in death March 12, 1995, by her husband of 66 years, Elmer L. Helton; her son, David Lee Helton; parents; brothers, Dr. Clyde S. Miller, Richard W. “”Dick”” Miller and Jack N. Miller; and sisters, Daisy E. Helton and Maude O. Nickels.Surviving are her daughter, Bertie Jo Helton of Springfield; three grandsons, six great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.Services were May 18 at the Palace Union Church with burial in the Palace Union Perpetual Care Cemetery under the direction of Waynesville Memorial Chapel.Memorials may be made to the Palace Union Perpetual Care Cemetery, c/o Loretta Helton, 16209 Wasbash Ln., Plato, Mo. 65552 “
