Ben E. “”Gene”” Ashworth, 76, son of Marion “”Doc”” and Ida Townley Ashworth, was born April 6, 1929, at Mammoth Spring, Ark. He died Aug. 7, 2005, at his home at Villa Grove, Ill., of melanoma cancer.He grew up at Houston, where he attended school.He married Virginia Fulk Dec. 10, 1948, at Noble, Ill.Mr. Ashworth was a retired carpenter and member of the Living Hope Fellowship Church at Villa Grove.He loved working with his hands and in 1940 made a headstone from a large flat stone and carved his infant brother’s name, date of birth and death.After his retirement, he made clocks in the shape of cabins, old houses and mills.He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathy; a brother, Frankie Dale; and a sister, Alene.Surviving are his wife; two sons, Ben Ashworth Jr. of Arcola, Ill., and Charles Ashworth of the home; a daughter, Barbara Reifsteck of Fisher, Ill.; a brother, Marion Ashworth Jr. of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Irene Graves and Bonnie Lawley of Springfield; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.Services were Aug. 10 at Villa Grove with the Rev. Clint Rasmussen and Fred Lawley Jr. officiating. “
