128th Anniverary of Service

The Houston Herald was established in 1878 with J.H. Steffens, manager. Editors were Dr. C.M. Ross and J.T. White. Ross and sons were sole owners until 1889, when Col. W.L. Lyles of Salem purchased it.

His son, E.K. Lyles became the editor. Lane and Frances Davis bought it in 1946. Their son, Robert L. Davis, joined them in 1960.

Today, Bradley G. Gentry is the newspaper’s managing editor and publisher.

-E.K. Lyles, the Herald’s editor for 50 years. He died in 1955.

Journalism Excellence

Each year, the newspaper is recognized by its industry peers. It has won numerous awards from the Missouri Press Association and most recently was honored by the association with awards in the state’s 2005 Better Newspaper Contest. The Herald won several awards in the 2005 contest.

Linotype The Herald used a linotype to produce the newspaper before becoming one of the first papers in the country in the 1960s to introduce offset printing to the county.
