Mary Leora Hunter Hubbs, 93, the first of five children of Lucian and Ruth Stevenson Hunter, was born Jan. 24, 1914, on a farm near Eunice. She died Jan. 30, 2007, at Grandview Health Care Center at Washington, Mo.

Mrs. Hubbs attended rural school at Pine Flat through the eighth grade. She graduated in 1933 from Summersville High School. There was no bus to ride, so she rode in a Model T Ford driven by her friend, Hazel Hubbs Gaston. When buses began to operate, she walked three miles to meet it.

She earned a teaching certificate in high school and began teaching at Pine Flat for $35 a month. Her 40-year teaching career included Kell, Bell and Summersville Elementary for 28.5 years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1957 from Southwest Missouri State College.

She married Lester Hubbs Dec. 14, 1935, at the Methodist church at Salem. They made their home on the Hubbs farm where her husband was born. They were married 50 years and had one daughter.

Mrs. Hubbs was a member of the Eunice Baptist Church.

After retiring, the Hubbs continued to farm, raising hay and beef cattle.

After the death of Mr. Hubbs Dec. 8, 1985, Mrs. Hubbs moved to Houston.

She spent time as a volunteer at the Texas County Library in Houston, quilting and sewing. She enjoyed traveling on the Sunnyland Bus tours to different parts of the U.S. and visiting her family and friends.

She moved in 2001, to Washington, Mo., to be near her daughter.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Ina Gaston and Irma Gaston and an infant.

Surviving are her daughter, Carol West of Villa Ridge; brother, Carl Hunter of Houston; sister, Aleda Hubbs of Richland, Va.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were Feb. 3 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wesley Wallace officiating. Burial was in the Union Chapel Cemetery.
