Nellie Ivie Fischer, 89, daughter of Millard David and Bessie Ivie Wade, was born Aug. 16, 1917, at Slabtown in Texas County. She died May 12, 2007.

She married Alfred W. Fischer Dec. 28, 1940. They started their married life on a farm at Hazeltown, later moving to a farm near Licking. They ran a dairy and beef cow operation.

After her husband’s death in 1962, Mrs. Fischer began a new career with the Licking Schools. She worked with countless students over the years. She was fondly known as the gypsy palm reader at school-related parties.

She was an avid reader. As a member of the Texas County Library board, she was instrumental in acquiring the present Licking branch. After retiring from the board, she was active in the Licking Friends of the Library.

She was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Licking.

She loved quilting and for many years was a member of the church quilting group. She loved playing pinochle and dominoes and was known as a competitive domino player at the Bridge Builders Senior Center. She enjoyed traveling and was first in line to sign up for bank-sponsored trips. When her daughter’s family lived in Germany, she flew to visit them and toured Europe.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters and brothers, Irene Hogan, Cray Wade, Charles E. Wade, Leslie L. Wade, Beatrice Schmidt and Richard Wade.

Surviving are her daughters, Carol Elizabeth Babcock and Linda Rae James; son, Henry David Fischer; brother, Bill Calvin Wade; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

Services were May 16 at the United Methodist Church in Licking with Connie Bell officiating. Burial was in the Craddock Cemetery under the direction of Fox Funeral Home.
