A Mountain Grove man was indicted by a federal grand jury last week on charges related to mailing a pipe bomb with the intent to injure another person.

Donald W. Schamber, 60, was charged in a four-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury in Springfield. The indictment replaces a federal criminal complaint that was filed against Schamber on June 4 and includes three additional charges.

Schamber, a Texas County resident, allegedly mailed a pipe bomb wrapped in brown packing paper and addressed to the West Plains Police Department. A postal carrier discovered it June 1 in a West Plains mail collection box.

Authorities allege Schamber, who lived on Highway EE in the southwestern part of the county, hatched the plot in an attempt to implicate his ex-wife’s husband.

Schamber faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison without parole on charges of using explosive materials to commit the offense. He is also charged with mailing a destructive device with the intent to injure another person, which carries a 20-year sentence and transporting explosive materials and making a destructive device.

The Texas County Sheriff’s Department, which executed searches at Schamber’s resident and another one occupied by the suspect’s son, assisted multiple agencies investigating the case. Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Oliver is prosecuting the case.
