The Texas County Memorial Hospital Healthcare Foundation raised $8,000 at its second annual charitable golf tournament June 9.

Forty-five teams participated in the 18-hole two-person scramble. Prizes awarded to the top three teams in four categories: championship flight; A flight; B flight; and C flight. Golfers had the opportunity to win a new 2007 Buick Lucerne at a hole-in-one sponsored by Wehr Automotive and $20,000 cash at a hole-in-one sponsored by State Farm Insurance, Jim Feighery, agent. Several other prizes such as a new computer, St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals tickets were offered for hole-in-one, closest to the pin and longest drive contests.

The team of Doug Cook and John Cook won a tiebreaker with Derrick Shelton and Roger Tune to win the championship flight. Both shot 60s. Roger Tune and Randy Rees with a score of 62 finished third.

Randy Harris and Randy Nickels won the A flight with a 67, followed by Gary Stroup and Steve Pierce (67) and Lee Smith and Danny Bandy (68).

The TCMH Healthcare Foundation is the non-profit organizational arm of the hospital that develops relationships and financial resources to support the healthcare programs, projects and services of the hospital. A board of community leaders from across the county direct the TCMH Healthcare Foundation and the funds held by the foundation.

According to Jay Gentry, president of the TCMH Healthcare Foundation, the funds generated by the golf tournament will be used to fund scholarships for healthcare related educational fields.

“We filled all of the available team slots in the morning and afternoon rounds, and we received numerous sponsorships from individuals and businesses,” Gentry said, adding that a few late entry teams had to be turned away from the tournament.

Gentry noted that two corporate sponsorships by Mercy Health Plans and Tree Terminator of Plato greatly aided the foundation in putting on a nice tournament for the participants. Gentry also thanked the numerous volunteers and the staff at Oakwood for their time and efforts on behalf of the foundation’s tournament.

“Some of our winners also donated their winnings back to the foundation, something that we greatly appreciate,” Gentry said. “All of the money we receive for the foundation will remain in the county.”

The TCMH Healthcare Foundation plans to hold the golf tournament fund-raiser again in 2008.
