The Cabool School District received two federal grants this summer, bringing nearly $1 million in new services to Cabool youths during the next five years.
The district is one of 28 organizations in Missouri to be awarded a five-year, $980,000 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant to expand the Safe Schools-Healthy Students/Cabool YMCA after-school program for elementary students and to create a new after-school program for middle and high school students that will focus on technology education.
The elementary program will be able to add academic tutoring, athletic skill training, technology programs and a variety of fine arts programs. The after-school program will be offered each school day and during extended vacation periods.
The middle and high school program will be offered for two hours, four days a week. In addition to tutoring, students will be offered free courses such as video editing, digital photography, Web site design, music editing, hunter safety, woodworking, scrapbooking, fitness and more.
The second grant, Safe Routes to School, for $18,000, was awarded by the Missouri Department of Transportation. It will allow the school district to expand safety instruction for students who walk and ride to school. The grant will purchase bicycle helmets and instructional materials for students, and speed detection equipment for school zones. It will also pay for roadway striping around schools.
