Edna E. Smith, 78, daughter of Virgil and Mary Thompson Bates, was born May 6, 1929, at Raftville. She died July 30, 2007, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Mrs. Smith grew up in the Success area, where she attended school and graduated from Licking High School.

She married Bill Smith Sept. 22, 1956, at Richland. They had one daughter.

Mrs. Smith worked at International Shoe and The Lee Co.

She enjoyed watching TV and playing Aggravation. She loved the outdoors, working in her garden and growing flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, William Edward Bates, Charles Bates and Wayne Henry Bates; and one sister, Virginia Reider.

Surviving are her husband of Licking; one daughter, Connie Kennedy of Nixa; four brothers, Bob Bates and Gary Bates of Licking, Dean and Ray of Illinois; two sisters, Louise Walker of Licking and Marie York of Roby; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services are 2 o’clock Friday at the Boone Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Bobe and Billy Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.

Visitation is 6 to 8 o’clock tonight (Thursday) at the Evans chapel.
