Texas County Memorial Hospital and Deborah Belt-Kell, a licensed professional therapist and mental health counselor, are partnering for National Depression Screening Day. Kell invites area residents to call or drop in at the TCMH Medical Complex in Houston from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, for a free assessment.
Participants will have the opportunity to complete a brief written questionnaire, learn the warning signs of depression and suicide and learn how to help a friend or family member who may be at risk. Kell will be available to talk about any concerns participants may have. The screening is free and open to the public.
Kell noted that some warning signs of depression include hopelessness; rage or uncontrolled anger; engaging in reckless activity; a feeling of being trapped; increased alcohol or drug use; withdrawal from friends, family and society; anxiety or an inability to sleep; dramatic mood swings; and a lack of purpose for living.
Anyone exhibiting any of these signs of behavior should talk with a mental health professional such as Kell.
“National Depression Screening Day is an opportunity for our community to discuss issues that many people face,” Kell said. “Help is available locally for those suffering from depression and for the friends and family members of depressed individuals.”
Participants can personally visit with Kell at the TCMH Medical Complex on the south end of the hospital campus or they can call Kell at the clinic at 417-967-5435.
