El Dorado Scores With 1 Minute, 5 Seconds Left to Squeak Past Houston

El Dorado Springs dealt Houston its second straight heartbreaking loss.

One week after losing to Salem in the last 11 seconds, the Tigers gave up a touchdown with 1 minute, 5 seconds left as they lost to the Bulldogs 8-6 on the road Friday night.

El Dorado Springs, which had three second-half touchdowns called back due to penalties, got its first score when Cory Ketchum took a handoff up the middle for a 26-yard score with just over a minute left in the game.

Houston moved the ball to its own 45-yard line with 51 seconds left, but quarterback David Weybright was intercepted for the third time as the Tigers (0-6) lost their 17th consecutive game.

One week after being held without a reception, junior Ty Scheets had five catches for 126 yards for the Tigers. Weybright was 15-of-34 passing for 193 yards.

Houston mananged just 22 rushing yards on 20 carries. El Dorado Springs gained all 232 of its total yards on the ground, led by Ketchum’s 98 yards on 19 carries.

Houston controlled the game from the get-go, covering 95 yards on its opening drive to take an early lead. Weybright completed the 17-play, drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers ahead 6-0.

Houston converted two fourth downs on the drive, highlighted by an 18-yard pass from Weybright to running back Justin Schmidt that moved the ball to the 3-yard line. Weybright scored three plays later.

After Houston survived two El Dorado Springs touchdowns that were called back on consecutive plays in the third quarter, Kirk Pierce was whistled for intentional grounding on a muffed punt attempt from the end zone to make it 6-2.

The Bulldogs had a 41-yard run and 50-yard pass on back-to-back plays that went for touchdowns, only to be called back by penalties. Houston was pinned inside the 1-yard line after the punt, and Pierce was forced to scramble on the punt attempt before giving up a safety.

El Dorado Springs had another touchdown called back – the third in four plays – on its next play after the kickoff. The Bulldogs later punted.
