John S. Haggard, 60, son of John Allen and Evelyn DeWitt Haggard, was born March 18, 1947, at Springfield, Ill. He died Sept. 30, 2007, at Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston following a short illness.

He entered the Army June 1, 1970, where he was a motor transport operator for 18 years. He served in Vietnam and retired July 1, 1990, after 20 years. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, two Overseas Service Ribbons, two Vietnam Service Medals and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation Badge with Gold Star.

He loved to hunt and fish and do crafts for family and friends.

He farmed and was interested in genealogy, doing research on family history.

Surviving are his wife, Sallee Jo Stone Haggard of the home at Evening Shade; four daughters, Samantha Beck and Stacy Jonell Haggard of Plato, Susan Jean Phillips of Pensacola, Fla., and Sarah Jane Danielson of Crocker; parents of Springfield, Ill.; five brothers, David, Tim, Russ, Mike and John; three sisters, Marianne, Janet and Theresa; 10 grandhchildren and one great-grandson.

Services were Oct. 3 at the Palace Union Church with Terry Key and Greg Mitchell officiating. Burial with full military honors was in the Palace Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
