Houston’s Dean Campbell was one of more than 250 former Arkansas football players who honored outgoing athletic director Frank Broyles with their presence Saturday as the Razorback’s stadium was named after him.
Campbell and his son, Josh, were invited to Fayetteville as Broyles was recognized at halftime of the Arkansas-South Carolina game. Campbell, a 1972 Houston graduate, played four years at Arkansas for coach Jimmy Johnson.
After the band spelled out “Coach” and lined up in its traditional “A,” Campbell and other former players accompanied Broyles onto the field. A brief video tribute was followed by the unveiling of “Frank Broyles Field” above the south end zone. Broyles then led the crowd in the traditional “Pig Sooie” call.
The Campbells were treated to a pregame dinner and watched the game from skybox seats. Among the people they shared stories with were Dean’s recruiter and many of his former teammates.
Among the notable people present were Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and former Oklahoma Sooners coach Barry Switzer.
