The City of Houston’s plan to extend Thomasville Road south to Holder Drive and provide an outlet near a shopping development is moving forward, the Houston City Council heard Monday.
City Administrator Larry Sutton reported that he has verbal commitments from 11 property owners for easements to allow the project to proceed. Under the plan, Thomasville Road would extend south to Holder Drive near First National Bank and also connect north of Orscheln Farm and Home. The construction project, designed to alleviate traffic in an area that has seen much commercial development, is included in the city’s 2008 capital expenditures budget.
In other matters, members:
-Accepted a recommendation to disband a council committee for the police department and form a public safety committee that will oversee police, fire and emergency management.
-Entered in a consulting agreement with former City Administrator Bill Bates that allows him to complete some projects he was overseeing and assist with others.
-Tentatively gave approval for a liquor license to Mary Hunninghake, who is opening a business in a development at South Sam Houston Blvd. and East Highway 17.
-Renewed the city’s annual services contract with the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce.
-Authorized signage at the north and south city limits that highlights the community’s recent success in lowering its fire rating, which translates into lower insurance premiums.
-Heard that signage designing the city’s new storm shelter and street names downtown are in place. For the latter, the city’s street crew fashioned its own brackets for the project, saving a significant amount of money, Sutton reported.
