A wild fight early Tuesday morning near Cabool began with a hammer and ax handle. It ended with gunshots from a moving vehicle.
Fortunately, Texas County Sheriff Carl Watson said, no one was killed.
Watson said the crazy scene began shortly after midnight as a domestic dispute between Roger A. Christ, 20, and his girlfriend at a trailer park west of Cabool. It continued at a residence south of town and returned to the trailer park, where Christ allegedly assaulted the girl with a hammer. The altercation soon involved the boyfriend of the girl’s mother. Watson said the man whipped Christ with an ax handle.
Christ later met the girl’s mother and boyfriend at 8 a.m. three miles south of Cabool on Hwy 181. He turned his vehicle around, pursued them and fired through the back window of the woman’s truck. Watson said a bullet struck the woman, who was driving, in the right upper shoulder near her neck.
The girlfriend and her mother were taken to St. John’s Hospital with minor injuries. Both were released.
“We’re fortunate two or three people weren’t killed,” Watson said.
Christ was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree assault, serious physical injury, two counts of criminal action and discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle. He is being held at Texas County Jail with a $100,000 bond.
Authorities recovered a .22 automatic rifle believed to be used in the shooting.
Watson said further arrests and charges could be pending.
