If you are a tax deadbeat, don’t expect to be able to seek office in Texas County.
Under a law that recently went on the books, candidates seeking office must sign an affidavit that they owe no state income taxes, personal or real property taxes and that they owe no taxes from operation of a state fee office.
In addition to filing the new form, 5120, candidates also must pay a filing fee of $50 to the political party treasurer whose banner they plan to carry when seeking office. Both must be presented to the county clerk when filing. The period runs from 8 a.m. Feb. 26 until 5 p.m. March 25.
Persons filing for committeewomen and committeemen are exempt from filing the tax form and paying a filing fee, said County Clerk Don Troutman.
In Texas County, the offices of collector-treasurer, assessor, associate commissioners, sheriff, public administrator and coroner will appear on the ballot.
