A newly formed committee has developed guidelines for the use of the Houston Storm Shelter that was completed last year at First and Pine streets in Houston.
Members determined the structure will be used primarily as intended – as a storm shelter.
It was also agreed that public entities – city departments, county and state agencies – could use the building for short-term periods not to exceed one day. Other than the city use, the fee will be: 0-4 hours, $75; and up to eight hours, $100. The users will be required to sign an agreement that outlines the terms and conditions required.
Keys for the shelter are available from Bill Nichols, Houston emergency management director; and Jim Root, a city employee. An additional key will be kept at the sheriff’s office.
Members of the committee are Mayor Steve Hutcheson; Nichols; Jackie Smith, Texas County Health Department; Harold Bruening, Texas County Red Cross; and city representatives Marla Murphy, Joyce Campbell, Root and City Administrator Larry Sutton.
Anyone interested in use of the building can contact Nichols, Root or Sutton.
