A committee – Kids First for Houston Schools – has reorganized to seek passage April 8 of a $3.5 million bond issue that would result in a new library, computer technology classroom and science labs. If approved, no tax levy would result.
The plan was first introduced at a community forum in October, where support for the measure was received. Following input, the school board added modernization of the high school gymnasium to the issue.
The school board’s financial consultant is L.J. Hart and Associates, a St. Louis-based bonding company, whose plan allows the project to occur without any additional increase in the tax levy, which is currently 80 cents for building projects. If the measure passes, the debt service levy would remain at that figure.
The library, computer technology rooms, science space and up to 10 additional classrooms would be built at the site of the current fine arts building, which was constructed in 1921. It would be removed to allow for construction of the library and classroom complex.
Sam Winn & Associates, a Springfield-based architectural firm, was commissioned to determine the feasibility of restoring the building. Gary Barbe of the firm reported the cost would be in excess of $1 million. He also pointed out that even with restoration, the district would still not have a library or computer center that would meet minimum state standards.
The Kids First committee meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the middle school and high school library. Kevin Reed, president, said patrons are invited to the meetings. “Volunteers are always needed to help get the word out to area voters,” Reed said.
Those with questions about the ballot issue are welcome.
“The more information we can put in the hands of the community, the more likely our success at the polls on April 8,” he said.
