Virgil Elmer Smith, 91, son of Zachariah Herbert and Ada Cox Smith, was born March 31, 1917, near Cedar Grove. He died March 24, 2008, at Mountain View Heath Care.

Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.

He retired as a mechanic on a large wheat farm in Kansas. He also did carpentry work and spent many years caring for his mother and sister, Mildred.

He was a member of the Hartshorn Church of God. While living at Summersville, he attended the Summersville Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Clinton, Walter, Ralph and Charles; and two sisters, Eula Smith Murfin and Mildred Smith.

Surviving are two brothers, Arthur Smith of Sonoma, Calif., and Vernon “Chick” Smith of Meadville; and one sister, Velma Bailey Wallace of Villa Ridge.

Services were March 26 at the Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with Tom Dennis officiating. Burial with full military rites was in the Antioch Cemetery at Hartshorn.
