Emma Jean Smallwood, 88, daughter of Marvin and Opal Smallwood Zeck, was born Sept. 26, 1919, at Raymondville. She died April 1, 2008, at the home of her daughter at Rolla.
Mrs. Smallwood grew up in the oil fields of Texas and moved to Raymondville in her early teens. She was valedictorian of her graduating class at Houston High School.
She married Rufus L. Smallwood Easter Sunday 1942. They raised three children.
Mrs. Smallwood was an aide at Phelps County Regional Medical Center at Rolla in the ’50s and ’60s. She was a private duty nurse for many years.
She became a member of the First Assembly of God in 1967.
Her storytelling of her life in Texas County and Raymondville gave her family many hours of pleasure.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Surviving are her three children, Carol Whitson of Rolla, Larry Smallwood of Tulsa, Okla., and Mary Beyer of Billings; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were April 4 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Chuck Whitmire officiating. Burial was in the Allen Cemetery at Raymondville.
