Texas County taxpayers are confused concerning recent notices received in the mail indicating a rise in property values, said Texas County Assessor Debbie James.
Called an “impact notice,” the form is required to be sent out when a valuation change occurs. Texas County recently completed a parcel-by-parcel review that resulted in changes in some valuations.
Some taxpayers think it relates to a squabble between the state and county over how residential property should be valued, according to James. The matters are unrelated, she said.
“If I would of complied with the state tax order, the assessed value of all residential land would double and 20 percent would be added to all residential property. That would affect over 10,400 parcels,” she said. “The people that have just received an impact notice would receive a second notice with their recent reassessments values doubled on their residential land and 20 percent more on their residential property.”
“I feel many people are confused about these two issues and as your assessor, I want you to understand the difference in reassessment which has been completed and a flat tax being ordered by the State Tax Commission.”
