Marvin Marion Montgomery, 81, the fourth son and sixth child of William and Leona Sutton Montgomery, was born Nov. 16, 1926, on the family farm in the Brown Hill community east of Houston. He died May 31, 2008, at the Kabul Nursing Home after a 19-year battle with cancer.

He served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany for his overseas duty.

After receiving his honorable discharge, he purchased a milk route, hauling milk to Producers Creamery in Cabool. He did carpentry work with his brothers and later bought a bulldozing business from Troy Castleman.

In 1970, he and his wife established the first Sears Catalog Store in Houston. He later was a grader operator for Piney Township and eventually retired to stay on the farm and raise beef cattle.

He married Doris Kimrey Oct. 14, 1954. They had three children.

He accepted Christ as Savior and was baptized in 1989, joining the First Christian Church. He was faithful in attendance until his health prevented it.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Stonewall, John and Earl; and a sister, Lillie Sharpe.

Surviving are his wife; children Ann Schmitz of Parkville, Joe Montgomery of Houston and Molly Stephens of Fair Grove; two sisters, Wilda Blankenship and Ruby Gettys; five grandchildren, a great-grandson and two step-great-grandchildren.

Services were June 4 at the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with David Ingalls and Jeff Moore officiating. Burial was in the Pine Lawn Cemetery in a portion deeded to the City of Houston by his great-grandfather, Valentine Sutton.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the donor’s choice in Mr. Montgomery’s memory.
