Norman Gentry Terrill, 82, son of Ernest and Ellen Smith Terrill, was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Shannon County. He died June 2, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Mountain View.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from Jan. 5, 1944, to April 22, 1946. He was a motor machinist’s mate on the USS FT 662.

He married Martha Jane Duncan Oct. 18, 1946. They had eight children.

Mr. Terrill worked in the timber industry in his early years and for more than 20 years for the National Park Service, serving at the Round Spring Park before his retirement.

He accepted Christ at an early age and was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Summersville and Summersville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 722.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Emil, Roy, Virgil, Robert and Eugene; two infant sisters; and two sons, Gary and Danny.

Surviving are his wife of the home at Summersville; his children, Michael Terrill, Marlene Terrill, Barbara Atchison, Bonnie Russell and Jim Terrill of Summersville and Susan Smith of DeSoto; one sister, Virgie Hodge of Houston; one brother, Meril Terrill of Valley Park; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Services were June 5 at the First Baptist Church in Summersville with the Rev. Tommy Boyd and the Rev. John Atchison officiating. Burial with full military honors was in the Black Pond Cemetery under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home.
