The Texas County Board of Equalization is set to hear tax appeals later this month following a reassessment by the county assessor and a state order requiring the county to increase residential valuations.

Those wanting to appeal the reassessment order numbers will do so July 21 and July 22.

The panel, composed of the three county commissioners, county surveyor and two appointed officials, will meet on the state tax order appeals on July 24, 25, 28, 29 and 31 in the basement of the county courthouse.

Taxpayers last week received information about the state tax order in a mailing last week to more than 10,000. Under that edict, structural valuations increased 15 percent and lots and tracts by 25 percent.

Property owners wanting to protest the increase will need written documentation showing good cause to change the appraised valuation of their property. To make an inquiry about the process, call the assessor’s office at 417-967-4709.

The county also agreed to participate in a sales letter program by providing the State Tax Commission with information regarding real property transfers, and the State Tax Commission will mail sales questionnaires to buyers and sellers involved in those transactions. In 2009, market data will be analyzed and adjustments will be made to ensure assessments reflect market values.
