Douglas McArthur Shannon Sr., 66, son of Marvin Luther and Hallie Irene Witt Shannon, was born Feb. 14, 1942, at Sturkie, Ark. He died June 28, 2008.

He married Bertha Elliott Sept. 19, 1959, at West Plains. They were married 43 years and had three children.

For more than 40 years, Mr. Shannon was a minister, builder and enjoyed bluegrass music. He played every stringed instrument but never mastered the fiddle. He was best known for playing his Gibson Mastertone banjo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Rand, Ray and John; and two sisters, Pearlie Mae Smith and Laura Ann Norman.

Surviving are two daughters, Sherri Lynn Cronk of McRae, Ark., and Terri Wynn Beavers of Willow Springs; one son, Douglas McArthur Shannon Jr. of Mountain View; one brother, James Shannon of West Plains; sisters, Sybil Stanley, Kathleen Wheeler and Virginia Sue Bell of Hutcheson, Kan., and Bertha Elliott and Linda Fox of West Plains; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were July 2 at the Pentecostal Church of God in Mountain View with the Rev. M.Y. Bennett officiating. Burial was in the StateLine Cemetery under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home.
