After a winless weekend at the Springfield Classic, the Houston varsity volleyball team got back on the winning track Tuesday night with a hard-fought 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, road victory against Salem.

Kortney Huffman had a team-best eight kills and Sarah Pierce had 25 assists for Houston. Erica Keeney had three aces and Lainey Casper had 23 digs.

The Lady Tigers played without setter Tory Burgess, who missed the game with an illness.

“Salem’s coach told me her varsity had been playing well and our team had racked up a lot of losses lately. The difference was who we had been playing,” Houston coach Debbie James said. “We didn’t appear to be nervous and played more aggressively.”

Saturday at Springfield, the Lady Tigers dropped four matches in what James said was the toughest tournament her team had ever played in.

Houston was defeated by Westminister (25-20, 25-16), Willard (25-12, 25-12), Glendale (25-13, 25-13) and Sacred Heart (25-23, 25-13).

“The scores don’t show it, but we had lots of good rallies and played much better,” James said. “Our young team worked hard all day and improved in many areas.”

Honig led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills in the tournament. Burgess had 26 assists, Keeney had nine blocks and Pierce and Casper added two aces apiece.
