Vernon E. McKinney, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, in Bucyrus.
He was born April 27, 1922, in Lee’s Summit, son of Robert Guy and Grace Johnson McKinney. He married Margaret Ann Peggy Shoffeitt in 1948.
A 1941 graduate of Houston High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was discharged three years later with the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate First Class. He served in the Pacific during World War II and later with the Merchant Marines.
He was a plumber, welder and metal smith. He worked many years with Tuttle Utility Gas and Rust Utilities in Houston, installing and repairing ductwork used in heating and cooling systems for homes and businesses.
A member of the Church of Christ, he enjoyed hunting, riding motorcycles and woodworking.
Survivors include a son, Michael McKinney; a daughter, Peggy Kathleen McKinney; and a sister, Dorothy McKinney Connolly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers.
Services are 10 a.m. today (Thursday) in the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Don Pruitt officiating. Burial is in Emery Cemetery.
