Texas County residents are eligible for unemployment benefits due to flooding that occurred in September, according to the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Requests for disaster unemployment assistance will be made effective Sept. 14, 2008.

The president last week announced that Missourians living or working in 14 counties and the City of St. Louis who currently are unemployed, or were impacted due to the recent September severe storms and flooding, may be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.

The deadline to file is Dec. 15.

Disaster unemployment assistance is intended for those who are not eligible for benefits under a state’s regular unemployment insurance program. Farmers, self-employed county residents and others who are denied regular unemployment insurance benefits may now be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.

Funds for this program are provided by the federal government and do not come from the state employer payroll taxes used to finance regular unemployment benefits.

Missourians who need information about how to file a claim should call 800-788-4002.
