Nasty weather Saturday dropped Texas County off the leader board for the opening weekend of the fall firearms deer season. The county failed to crack the top three list, and its total was below last year’s figure, the Missouri Department of Conservation reported Monday.
High winds and a light drizzle contributed to a count that was about 200 below last year’s count: 1,642. Hunters in Texas County bagged 774 antlered bucks, 248 button bucks and 620 does.
The top counties in the state were: Macon, 1,970; Benton, 1,932; and Callaway, 1,651.
Last year’s first two days brought a kill count of 1,817.
“Weather was a big factor on Saturday,” said Jeff Crites, a conservation agent.
The season ends Nov. 25.
