An engineering firm recently toured the Houston Memorial Airport as part of the development of layout plan on Houston’s west side. The project was among several discussed Monday during a meeting of the Houston City Council.

City Administrator Larry Sutton said the visit is part of a process that will allow the city to receive improvement funds from the Missouri Department of Transportation’s aviation division.

The council also received an update on projects undertaken by Downtown Houston, a downtown revitalization group. About a dozen members attended the meeting, which also included a discussion on the nearly completed Houston Welcome Center near Oak Hill Drive and U.S. 63.

The project is targeted for completion at the beginning of the year, and occupancy of the building was discussed. A meeting with a cross section of several community groups is planned next month.

In other matters, members:

-Approved a $22,500 bid from Midwest Meter Inc. for water meter readers. The city takes readings using wireless technology. The equipment replaces some older units, and the city’s previous vendor ceased business, Sutton reported.

-Squared its financial books in its last meeting of the year. A budget for fiscal year 2009 was adopted earlier.

-Will receive about $10,000 for reimbursement as part of clean up efforts related to a September storm.

-Learned that new signage for traffic at Walnut Street and Grand Avenue is in place. Yellow signs with this message, “Through Traffic Doesn’t Stop,” were erected.
