Kyle Poynter and Ty Scheets each represented the Houston Tigers at two positions on the all-district football team.
Poynter was named a second-team wide receiver and kick returner. Scheets also received second-team recognition as a wideout and was an honorable mention pick at linebacker.
Poynter, a transfer from Lebanon, made a huge splash with his big-play ability. After joining the team in Week 5, Poynter reeled in 34 catches for a team-best 636 yards and eight touchdowns. Poynter had multiple touchdowns in his three of his first four games, highlighted by seven catches for 202 yards and three scores in his second game with the Tigers.
Poynter made nearly as big an impact in Houston’s return game. He returned seven kickoffs for 219 yards – a 31.3 yard per return clip – and had the team’s lone special teams touchdown. His second-half kickoff return for a touchdown against Willow Springs propelled the Tigers to a district-opening victory.
Scheets was his steady self, despite missing three games with a shoulder injury. He was second on the team with 43 catches for 623 yards and three scores.
Scheets’ top game only lasted one half. He had three catches for 150 yards, highlighted by a 75-yard touchdown reception, in the first half against Mountain Grove leaving with the shoulder injury.
At linebacker, Scheets was the team’s leading tackler before being injured. He finished second on the team with 64 tackles, including six for losses.
Offensive lineman Kyle Williams joined Poynter and Scheets on the second team.
Five more Tigers received honorable mention honors: David Weybright, quarterback; Travis Barker, linebacker; Martin Crawford, defensive back; Preston Wade, defensive line; and Brad Pounds, running back.
