The Houston board of education approved a plan Monday that will dismiss school early on Wednesdays during the next school year. Teachers and staff will use the time to collaborate to improve learning opportunities for students.

Under study for several months, the proposal was unanimously approved by the board. The decision will result in dismissal of school at 1:30 p.m. each Wednesday.

Dr. Dan Vandiver, superintendent, said “high quality professional development involves a thematic approach singularly focused on improving student performance.” The district hopes the change will result in improved student performance.

Vandiver said additional information about the program will be announced closer to the new school year.

Representatives of Sapp Design Associates, a Springfield firm, gave a report on preliminary work as the district moves forward toward construction of a new high school building.

A second community meeting for public input is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in the Houston Elementary School commons area. Vandiver said the public is encouraged to attend and offer input on proposals.

In other matters, members:

-Set graduation for 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Tiger Stadium.

-Tabled setting a calendar for the 2009-2010 school year, as well as seeking bids for propane for the next school year.

-Approved the renewal of contracts for all district administrators.
