Mary McCallister, 98, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at Houston House.

She was born Nov. 2, 1910, at Sherrill, daughter of Walter and Susan Salyer Tweedy. She married Lloyd Altis and later Glen McCallister following her first husband’s death.

She grew up in Ellis Prairie and graduated from Houston High School. She attended Rolla School of Mines for a year before receiving her teaching degree at Springfield Teachers College.

She taught at several rural schools and also worked in the County Superintendent of Schools office for a few years. In 1951, she worked for civil service at Fort Leonard Wood and retired in 1972. Upon retirement, she enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time in her yard taking care of her flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bill; a husband, Glenn; and a sister.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Jeffries of Springfield and Beverly Armstrong of St. Louis; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great great-grandchildren.

Services were 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at Evans Funeral Hope Chapel with Wesley Wallace officiating. Burial was in Pine Lawn Cemetery.
