Melvin Max Dixon, 85, died Sunday, March 22, 2009, at the Missouri Veterans Home in St. James.
He was born July 9, 1923, at the family farm in the Bean Creek area south of Licking, son of Robert E. and Mildred Holley Dixon. He and Roberta Stewart were married March 4, 1943.
He grew up on the farm and attended a one-room school at Upper Bean Creek. He entered the Army’s 79th Infantry in 1944. He earned the WWII Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with two bronze stars, two overseas bars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged May 4, 1946.
Upon his return to the states, he worked on the farm. He was later employed as a carpenter and owned his own gas station. He worked in the trucking business with Southwest Freight Lines, where he was a union steward. Following his retirement, he was a bus driver for 14 years with the Licking School District.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Licking Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leonard Dixon.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta of Licking; two sons, Norman Dixon of Licking and Larry Dixon of Rolla; two daughters, Mary Dixon Jurgensmeyer of Springfield and Joyce Dixon of Auxvasse; six grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; and two brothers, Delmar Dixon of Holt Summit and Ray Dixon of Licking.
Services were Wednesday, March 25, at Fox Funeral Home Chapel with Larry Tubbs officiating. Burial was in Williams Cemetery.
