Texas County Health Department representatives announced this week the agency will be switching in mid-May to the new statewide computer system for WIC.

The MO WIC Information Network System (MOWINS) electronic records will replace the current client paper charts on May 19.

“Education with the clients began Friday about the upcoming changes,” said Cheryl Nelson, WIC coordinator at the health department. “The WIC participants will notice the food instruments will look a little different, their May/June appointments may take a little longer and any missed appointments may result in reduced food packages.”

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has provided education in the past few months to the vendors in the state who redeem the food instruments. Training for the employees at Texas County Health Department who work with the WIC program will be May 5-8 at the local agency.

On Dec. 1, 2008, local public health agencies around the state began serving as pilot agencies for the new system.

“We are looking forward to the changes in WIC and improving the way we provide services,” said Nelson.
