The Texas County Community Garden will open Sunday afternoon in Houston with an afternoon of activities and informative talks.

The project is sponsored by Texas County Master Gardeners in cooperation with University of Missouri Extension. Activities run from 1 to 5 p.m. at Loretto House behind St. John’s Clinic on South Sam Houston Blvd. in Houston.

The goal is to raise healthy, nutritious fresh produce to distribute to the community through the Texas County Food Pantry.

“We are asking individuals, organizations and businesses to roll up their shirt sleeves and get their hands dirty to help feed our community,” said Carlyn Campbell, an organizer. “Adopt a small garden box and tend it so others less fortunate can have some fresh vegetables to eat.”

Persons are needed to plant, water, mulch and donate items such as seedlings, seeds, old shovels, rakes and compostable materials, such as food, office and farm wastes.

To kick off the event, there will be several demonstrations of different types of gardening, including square foot, lasagna, container and vermiculture.

Growing boxes will be assigned, literature handled out and questions answered.

Music is planned by Jimmy Orchard, the Nugent family and Seaman Don Mahon.

Vendors will sell bedding plants, and food and drink will be available.
