The Texas County Health Department is inviting local faith-based organizations to attend Gov. Jay Nixon’s kickoff event for community disaster preparedness

The event is 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Aug. 26, at First Assembly of God Church in Jefferson City. Its address is 1900 Route C.

The health department said faith-based organizations often hold communities together – caring for individuals, providing resources and offering compassion and support. Their role is vital to the health of the community and to its response and recovery following a disaster, it said.

This second phase of the Nixon’s Faith-Based Organization Disaster Initiative seeks to support faith-based organizations as they prepare to use their time, talents and resources to help people in need. It focuses on four components:

-Individual and family preparedness.

-Faith-based all hazards safety planning.

-Continuity of operations.

-Training for external ministries such as sheltering, feeding and case management.

“Our community is blessed to have faith-based organizations that care about people,” said Jackie Smith, administrator at the Texas County Health Department. “Please join the health department and our partners as we work together to strengthen our community and prepare for disasters. Attend the governor’s event to learn how your organization can bolster our community’s preparedness, resolve and recovery efforts.”

Those who wish to attend should RSVP to Diane Bosworth at 573-526-9104 or diane.bosworth@sema.dps.mo.gov. Mileage reimbursement is available with approval from the Texas County Health Department. Call 417-967-4131 for details.
