The Houston Senior Center will hold its annual walk-a-thon Friday, Sept. 18, the organization announced last week.

Letters have been sent seeking sponsorships or donations. A goal of $4,000 has been established to raise funds for congregate and homebound delivered meals programs.

One- and three-mile routes have been mapped out, beginning and finishing at the center. Cash prizes and awards will be given.

The Houston Senior Center served 39,924 homebound and congregate meals last year.

It has also provided all meals needed at the Licking Senior Center since July 2005. It has increased the number of meals and hours necessary to provide meals to seniors in the area. These meals provide nutrition and are one way of helping individuals remain in their own homes despite problems of aging, disability or illness, according to administrator Bernadine Hohlt.

Recipients of homebound meals are part of an age group that is rapidly growing in numbers, and it should be recognized that increased human and financial resources are required to meet the need for homebound meals, Hohlt said.
