Steven Lee Wendell, 62, of Success, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, in rural Houston.

He was born Aug. 3, 1947, in Champaign, son of Clinton and Mary Jean Feicke Wendell. He and Cindy Ridgley were married Feb. 7, 1971, in Champaign, Ill.

He was a farmer. He graduated from Moore High School, Farmer City, Ill., in 1965 and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1970 with a bachelor of science in animal science.

He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at the University of Illinois and past president of the Alpha Gamma Rho Alumni Association.

He had been the State of Illinois Section 16 president of the FFA. He received numerous awards for speaking contests in FFA and 4-H. He was a delegate to the state FFA convention. He received the state farmers award, won the national judging contest for fat stock, had been a top notcher 4-H leader and a member of the farm bureau.

He was a member of the Farmer City United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Benjamin Wendell.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy of the home; his mother, Mary Jean Wendell of Parker, Colo.; a son, Lawren Wendell of DeWitt, Ill.; three daughters, Dawn Burris and Angela Carter of DeWitt, Ill., and Heather Wendell, of Farmer City, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Muhlhauser, of Parker, Colo.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Home in Farmer City, Ill., with the Rev. Steve Barrow officiating. Burial will be in Johnson Cemetery, rural DeWitt, Ill.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
