The Houston board of education authorized hiring two positions and installing new seating in Hiett Gymnasium during a meeting Monday.

A part-time administrative assistant position was created. When filled, the employee will work the district’s director of curriculum and federal programs to assist with paperwork, data entry and other office tasks.

The board also okayed adding a special education teacher in the elementary building because of an increase in the number of students served.

Members also approved new seating at Hiett Gymnasium that may be installed over the Christmas break. Dr. Dan Vandiver said the cost is expected to be about $85,000 to $90,000, which doesn’t include removal of the old bleachers. Seat backs are included in the bid specifica

tions for those installed on the west side of the gym.

In other matters, members:

-Okayed the purchase of a school bus.

-Heard that a routine audit of the school’s accounting found no findings.

-Heard a presentation on library needs in the district.

-Will appoint an employee committee to review the district’s options related to supplemental insurance needs.
