Kim Epperly reads to first graders at Houston Elementary School as her dog, Snickerdoodgle, hangs out nearby. Epperly owns Paws 'n Claws and volunteers at The Animal Shelter of Texas County.

Many members of the community took time the past five days to read to students at Houston Elementary School as part of Reading Week.

The annual event is made possible by The Bank of Houston, which sponsors the Herald’s Newspaper In Education program. A representative of the bank read to second grade students each day.

The remaining four grades read to by a different personality each day, including local vet and school board president Tom Dunn, Shari McCallister of D&L Florist, conservation agent Travis Mills, three members of the Marines and many others.
