Financial belt-tightening may force the Houston Alumni Association to reduce the frequency of its membership newsletter, the organization said last week.
Not enough people have paid dues this year to cover the cost, which is about $2,000 annually for printing and mailing. Unless additional funds are received, the newsletter will be published only once yearly.
The matter was discussed during a recent meeting of the association, where officers were elected. They were: president, Bonnie Harmon McElroy; vice president, Paul Ice; corresponding secretary, Kay Marsh Honeycutt; recording secretary, Sandy Blankenship Craven; treasurer, Callie Hart Manier; and historian, Virginia Dean Clark.
Members said changes seem to be needed for the annual homecoming weekend. There has been a gradual decrease in the number of people attending the alumni banquet and musical gala. The association is going to entertain changes. Anyone with ideas can visit the Web site — www.hhsalumni.us — and click “contact us” and e-mail either the president or editor. Persons may also call Paul Ice at 417-967-2745 or write: 5934 Highway DD, Houston.
One of the first major events of the year for the association is choosing and awarding scholarships to four graduating seniors at Houston High School. The Collins Scholarship will go to one student, and two more will be chosen for the regular alumni association scholarships. This year will be the first time the gender of the winners will be disregarded. The class of 1964 also has announced plans to sponsor a scholarship independently, but the alumni group will be responsible for awarding it.
