Texas County Farm Bureau will hold its annual promotion in early February to highlight the role farmers play in providing an abundant, safe and affordable supply of food.
The dates are Feb. 7 -13, the time at which the average American would have earned enough during the first weeks of the year to pay for their annual food supply.
The organization said most people, particularly in urban areas, have little contact with the source of their food supply, relying on others to produce what they need. It noted that citizens are taking the food supply for granted and don’t associate the food in the grocery store or restaurant to a farm. Farmers’ markets also play a role in providing food; one operates at Pine and First streets in Houston.
According to Farm Bureau, about 10 percent of disposable income is used to purchase food – about 58 percent toward eating at home and 42 percent away.
The promotion is designed to tell agriculture’s story and connect people to the food supply provided by farmers, dairymen and ranchers.
